What happens when literary maps fail the reader? When visual hierarchy, narrative comprehension and spatial coherence collapse, does an illustrated map retain a role beyond “mere” ornament? Through a series of playful design interventions, this work explores questions of cartographic function and form in order to re-examine the way in which contemporary illustrators approach the design of literary maps, and the manner in which a modern audience engages with them.
